Yes, SEO is an extremely important part to your success online, but there are literally hundreds of SEO myths flying around cyberspace that can dampen your overall results. If you take a good hard look at the majority of the information you will find that most of it is opinionated rather than factual. So today we want to share with you the twelve most common SEO myths on the Internet today.

1. All Links are Created Equally: Just because you have thousands of backlinks it doesn't mean that you are going to be successful. All links are not created equally, and poor quality links won't make any difference in your results. The highest quality of links are natural, one-way links from related sites which rank highly.

2. Keyword Density is Important: Another one of the most common SEO myths is the myth of keyword density. There is no set keyword density that is guaranteed to provide you with success in the search engines. It's about incorporating your targeted keywords and phrases in the right places, in the right ways while not overdoing it and making your content or website seem like spam.

#3- Meta Keywords Still Work- Okay, if you've been reading up on meta keywords you can stop wasting your time. Yes, they used to be extremely valuable, but after Google and Yahoo publicly announced they no longer use them in their algorithm calculations, it's pointless. Just remember to stick with the meta descriptions and tiles because these still play a major role.

#4- Web Directories are Highly Valuable- If you find this sort of information online it is probably outdated. It's been a long time since these were considered "highly valuable." Keep in mind it's still important to find the highly credible web directories, because they do offer advantages, but the general ones really don't hold weight anymore.

5. Blackhat SEO Won't Get you Caught: Many people think that anything they do won't be discovered, and that even if someone does find out they won't get punished. The truth is that no matter large or small your operation is, you can get caught using illicit marketing or promotion tactics and you can get delisted from the major search engines as a result.

#6- SEO Success Happens Overnight- It's to fathom that people still believe this, but it's one of the biggest SEO myths out there. The truth is SEO is a process that takes weeks, months, and even years to achieve success. It's an endless battle and it's something you have to constantly work on throughout the year. It's a long term strategy, not a quick fix solution.

7. Google is All That Matters: Obviously Google is the largest and most powerful search engine that's out there today. However, one of the most prevalent SEO myths is that it's all the matters for the success of your website. This can't be farther from the truth. With Yahoo!, Bing, other search engines, a slew of important social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube and MySpace and various other tactics such as article marketing there are a variety of ways to drive traffic to your sites besides Google.

#8- PageRank is Everything- Page ranking was extremely important when there was only one way to decipher the ranks. However, when the algorithms began to change in hopes of providing more relevant information, thinking they were everything turned into one of the SEO myths. It definitely still helps, but with the constant algorithm fluctuation it's not as big.

#9- Common Sense is More Important than Research- If you think something works online, it doesn't necessarily mean everyone else believes the same thing. A prime example of this is through keyword selection. There are hundreds of different ways to find keywords and in order to find them you need to do research. If you don't you can easily end up losing out in the long run.

10. More Traffic is Always Better: Receiving a lot of traffic is generally great, but if all of your traffic is untargeted you won't be producing any results. Additionally, sites with high bounce rates can end up suffering in the search engines as a result because your site is viewed as having something wrong with it or being a match. Therefore, first strive for highly targeted traffic and then work to increase and expand your base.

#11- Purchasing Links and Link Farms Always Work- Years ago this was extremely helpful, but Google has figured out the loophole and basically put an end to it. Yes, it's possible to receive a few benefits this way, but considering the money and time invested it's definitely not worth it. Plus, many of these situations are considered blackhat avenues which end up being penalized.

12. Once You Achieve a Ranking, Your Work is Done: One of the largest SEO myths of them all is that SEO is a one-shot deal. In other words, just because you achieve a ranking it doesn't mean your work is over. In truth, that's the easy part and the hard part is maintaining or improving on that ranking as time goes on. Your website has fierce competition from many sources, and you need to work hard to maintain your presence.

These SEO myths are why so many people fail in the marketing world. It's a combination of stubbornness and just finding the wrong information when searching how to successfully market your website. If you can stay up to date with the latest trends, you will end up staying away from those schemes and pitfalls that cause others to fail.
